Log Cabin rates Congressional Republicans
by Doreen Cudnik
Log Cabin Republicans has released their ratings of Congressional Republicans for the 104th Congress. The ratings system was based on votes in Congress on legislation that were specific to the gay
Rich Tafel
and lesbian community, public meetings with Log Cabin Republicans and public statements regarding the gay and lesbian community. The ratings are 0 to 100 and broken down into eight categories-
Leader, Friend, Supportive, Cooperative, Tolerant, Nonsupportive, Hostile and Antagonistic.
"The ratings system demonstrates that the Republican party is not a monolith on gay and lesbian issues,” said Rich Tafel, executive director of Log Cabin Republicans. "We have leaders on issues of importance to gay Americans and we have people who are antagonistic. Contrary to public perceptions, party identification is less a determinant than demographics when considering these issues."
Tafel will be in Cleveland on March 14. The local Log Cabin Chapter will hold a reception at the Vase to Vase Gallery at 10431 Clifton Blvd. Light refreshments will be served, and the cost is $10 for nonmembers, free to 1996 paid members. Call John Farina at 216-521-2684 or Bob Reynolds at 216-661-5415 for more information about this event.
Mom and gay son to read
Marlene Fanta Shyer and Christopher Shyer, authors of Not Like Other Boys, Growing Up Gay: A Mother and Son Look Back (Houghton Mifflin), will read from their book at An Open Book, 749 North High St. in Columbus on Saturday, March 2 at 7 pm.
New Cincinnati bar
When a new bar that caters to a lesbian and gay clientele opens its doors in conservative Cincinnati, it is certainly newsworthy. Our correspondent in the Queen City, John Young, reports that the new bar in question is called Colors, and it is located at 4042 Hamilton Ave. across from the Crazy Ladies Feminist Bookstore. Parking is available in a lot behind Crazy Ladies.
Young reports that "the interior decor is true to the establishment's name; colorful, though not overwhelmingly garish." He added that the place was very relaxing and comfortable, with cushioned chairs, stylish tables and drinks served in actual glassware instead of plastic cups, adding a touch of class.
"The bar windows are open to the street in a manner that says 'We're here' and here to share our warmth and happiness," Young said. "Also with its location in the Northside area of Cincinnati across from the Crazy Ladies Center and near a new restaurant, Boca's, and up the street from a predominantly lesbian bar, Bullfish's, the bar is becoming a place where gay men and lesbians are again mixing with one another." Sounds like a place definitely worth checking out.
Colors is open from 5:00 p.m. to 2:30 a.m. every day of the week. Phone 513-6816969 for more information.

The memoir alternates between the voices of a fearful mother who tries to cure her son of homosexuality and later comes to embrace him, and a son's torment and final acceptance of himself. Houghton Mifflin call Not Like Other Boys "the only book on homosexuality written from two points of view, providing a unique and revealing look at how a family's life was affected by years of denial and secrecy."
The authors will be available for questions and autographs following their read-

age of nine. She has released seven albums on her own label Righteous Babe Records, rejecting offers from almost every major record label in an effort to remain true to her own vision. “I spent all these years building this wonderful house to live in and they say, 'Oh, look at this beautiful little place... how much?' And I say, 'No you don't understand, [this is] my home and it's not for sale.'

Don't let the folk label fool you; Ani is notorious for blowing speakers. Although her line-up consists only of herself and pal Andy Stochansky on drums, they are able to accomplish the huge sound without a tape loop or synthesized tracks. "Sound guys see an acoustic guitar and drums and say, 'Oh, that's just some pansy-ass folk show, Difranco said. "They don't understand that this is a really heavy, loud sound."
Peabody's Down Under is located at 1059 Old River Road in Cleveland's Flats. Tickets for the show are $12 in advance and $13 day of show. Advance tickets are available at all TicketMaster locations or by calling 216-241-5555.
